CFP: Irish Drama on the European Stage(s)

Symposium Irish Drama on the European Stage(s) 7th May 2020 University College Cork Ireland

The works of playwrights such as J.M. Synge, Seán O’Casey and, more recently, Brian Friel, Martin McDonagh, Enda Walsh or Elaine Murphy have been (and continue to be) extensively translated and incorporated to stage practice throughout Europe.

This symposium seeks to explore the trajectory of Irish dramatic writing from the 20th and 21st centuries through European networks of theatrical exchange, as well as its visibility and position in different contexts of practice, with special attention to peripheral theatre systems.

Keynote Speaker Professor Sirkku Aaltonen (University of Vaasa)

In line with the transdisciplinary aim of the event, the organisation invites proposals for 20-minute papers in English dealing with the different facets of translation and theatre creation from a range of perspectives. Thematic areas include, but are not limited to:

 From Irishness to universality: Irish drama and Irish dramatists in other cultural and theatrical contexts.

 Stage representations of Ireland and their cross-cultural mediation.  Irish origin and relevance, acceptability or commercial viability in the target context.

 The (in)visibility of the translation process: adaptation, relocation and other pathways from source to target text.

 Page to stage: the relationship between editorial and theatrical activity.

Please send your abstract (max. 200 words) and a brief biographical note to Dr Elisa Serra Porteiro (e.serraporteiro@ucc.ie) by Monday, 16th December 2019.
