AEDEI 2016 (Zaragoza)

A brief description of XV International AEDEI Conference Zaragoza, Spain (26-28 May, 2016)

This year the city of Zaragoza and its University has hosted the XV International AEDEI Conference. Two thousand and sixteen being the centenary of the Easter Rising 1916, the Organizing Committee made, not just this specific rebellion, but the whole revolutionary decade (1913-1923), the focus of the conference. Many contributions came from historians and sociologists, together with a good number of papers analysing contemporary literary representations of different Irish revolutions. Participants ranged from Professors to postgraduate students, and came from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain and other parts of the world.

Plenary Lectures were given by Prof. Declan Kiberd (University of Notre Dame; UCD), Prof. Gerardine Meaney (UCD) and Dr. Maureen O’Connor (University College Cork). Guest artists performed by talented Vukasin Nedeljkovic and Sarah Clancy, and cultural events featuring prominent Irish folk music group “Celtic Airs” and Flamenco guitar Nacho Estévez, “El Niño” made delegates’ experience of work a more meaningful and positive one.

Conference organizer Constanza del Río Álvaro and the rest of the Organising Committee worked hard to offer delegates an amazing academic and social programme. We all lived a wonderful experience that surely will remember with warmth and pleasure.
