Ireland and Latin America-  Globalizing Irish Studies: The Idea of a Nation and Narratives of Independence

Santiago, Chile 9-12 December 2018

The conference is organized through a partnership that includes several Latin American, American, and Irish universities as well as various Irish Studies associations.

The conference will explore three broad areas:

  • Themes related to the history of Irish influence in Latin America and vice versa, particularly regarding the theme of independence;

  • Narratives (whether literary, cultural, cinematic, musical, or taking other forms) related to the history of revolutions and independence; and

  • Contemporary issues.

These themes will be addressed in keynotes, roundtables, and paper sessions.

Preliminary ideas for session themes include:

  • Historical links of the Americas and Ireland

  • Political and cultural relations between Ireland and 19th-century Latin America

  • The literature of revolutions and independence

  • Economy and regional integration

  • Reception of Irish literature

  • Irish and Latin American modernisms

  • Popular culture and music

  • Mass media in the contemporary world

  • Representations in theatre and other arts

  • Cultural and literary translations

  • Irish migration studies

Organizers also envision cultural events—films, music, and dance—that would be open to the public.
